How many vaulters have jumped their age the past few years?

Unread postby PVCoach » Wed Nov 13, 2002 11:38 am

I'm curious to see how many vaulters have jumped their age the past few years, or go back further if you like. If they are out of high school are they still jumping and what are they jumping.

I only know of a few but I'm sure there are more.

Chase Shealy 15'1" at 15 yrs, and 16' 7" at 16 yrs old.
Mitch Greeley 15' 6" at 15 yr's.
Earl Bell 7' as a 7 yr old
Maxim Tarasov 19' at 19 yrs, maybe prior to that as well.

I'm positive Jacob Davis did it two or three times, and he may be one of only a few to jump his age plus one. Can someone confirm?

I'm pretty sure Tommy Skipper and Donavan Kilmartin have jumped their age, but I can't confirm. How about Tyson Byars? Eric Eshbach? Johnathan Henly? Lawrence Johnson?

I don't know of any females that have done it. It would almost have to be 10' at 10, 11' at 11, or 12' at 12 if they have. If they jump within two foot of there age they are doing extremely well.

Here are some of the WA people. I don't know ages though... depends on when their birthdays are. McKane is not jumping over his age though because I know he is a year older than his grade.

Matt Merritt (he has a really good mark for grade 7 but I forget it)
Grade 8 14’6â€Â

Girls jumping their grade is our measuring stick. We've had several 9th graders at 9 (1 at 10'), but only 1 10th grader at 10 and 11th grader at 11'. Alas no 12 at 12.

You are 100% right about Casey Carrigan. He was incredible and way ahead of his time. If he had jumped the 17' 4.75 about 6 months earlier I think it would have been a World Record. I believe Bob Seagren set a new record at around 17' 5 or 6".

Matt Merritt probably did jump his age once or twice. We need someone to give us the ages of the others when they cleared the heights. You may have Matt's email to find out for sure.

Most vaulters because it is a spring sport have already had birthdays and haven't done it. Some are a year behind their class and seem to have done but haven't. Many have been close but few have the milestone. We need confirmation from someone who knows Tyson and McKane. They're really good but may have missed jumping their age.

Girl's to jump there grade is good for comparing. Many jump there grade and it's still an elite group. I wonder how many have jumped there grade plus one, or grade plus two feet.

We have had a few:

Sara Young, twice grade plus 1', 10th 11'0", 11th 12'5.5".
Beth Jordan, grade plus one, 10th 11'0" and grade 11th 11'6".
Cheryl Terrio, grade 11th 11'4".
Liza Todd, grade 9th 9'0"
Megan Fletcher, grade 9th 9'0"

Those are the only ones that come to mind.

I do remember that I think that Samatha Shephard, who was a senior last year, jumped 12'6" in 8th grade....so that's grade plus 4 1/2!!!!

Washington's girls are very impressive! I'm surprised no 13 ft girls with the depth of good vaulters listed. I'll bet money there will be at least one 13 ft girl there this year. How long has vaulting been official for girls in Washington?

This was the second "Official" year for SC, although a few have been at it longer.

2000 was the first year it was a scored event. It was an exhibition event the 2 years before that. Before that only a handful of girls did it, most notably Libby Ludlow of Interlake who cleared 11'0 as a freshman in 1997 :)

I expect to see several girls go 13 feet next year, with Stevie, Doria, and Emily Enders all returning
