Only 8 guys made a bar in the seeded flight?
I would much rather work with 100% heart and 75% talent than 100% talent and 75% heart!

there was a pretty strong headwind, and all of the guys where having problems, and the girls where too.
work, sweat, tears, and pain... all of this for just one gain.
are you tough enough?

good morning

i think i remember poor winds last year and an attitude about not changing the pit! can't remember if it was changed but do remember some pretty scary "coming up short and un-safe". felt the vaulters that jumped well should get an extra pat on the back...

great job all

It was a pretty steady headwind. No one did particularly well, except for Michael Uhle who PR'ed in the lower section to place third overall. Congrats to Spencer and Shade.

this meet was a perfect example of what can happen, and congrats to those who worked through it. I think it proves expierence in the coaches and vaulters to jump no matter what the conditions. It was still a fun meet to go to and watch i think but i surely hope the winds don't change for the worst before nationals like they did, because i had 2 meets there within the last month and the winds were steady tail for both. i think it was the storm system that came through that messed up the winds but it happens. Hope everyone had fun, and special congrats to jason who got 4th overall and jumped in the unseeded section with the height of 15'9.75" as well as the other jumpers!

Thanks a lot man! It was kind of ridiculous when they wouldnt turn the pit around. If they had asked a few of the 42 or so vaulters in the unseeded section to turn it around we would have. Then maybe more than half of the vaulters wouldnt have no hieght. Maybe next year, congrats to all!

I was pleased with the way most of my kids handled the winds, however, I don't believe the winds should have been an issue at a facility with the capabilities to turn the pit around!

This was the NIKE OUTDOOR NATIONALS and 24 of the 47 vaulters in the boys division NH'd. These kids, their families and their coaches pay a lot of money to travel across the country for this prestigious meet! We jump into headwinds all the time here in Arkansas simply because the majority of our high schools don't have the capability to change directions.

I saw several boys and girls narrowly escape serious injury trying to adjust for a headwind that should have never existed.

It would have taken 5 stinkin minutes to turn that pit around and any vaulter or vault coach can vouch for that.

I'm not usually a whiner on things like this, but after driving 16 hours straight to get home yesterday, I'm a little disgruntled! Two years in a row into a headwind? Come on!

Just remind the official that he could probably be held liable if a kid gets hurt since he has been informed of the danger of jumping into the wind, has the opportunity and authority to remove a dangerous factor in the event but is refusing to do so. (Whether that's true or not doesn't really matter since most rational people will avoid a slim chance at a lawsuit if they can)

Did that! I saw more disgusted and disappointed faces on a group of kids than I've ever seen in one meet and I guess that's why I'm venting.

Answer from an official in response to your posts:

Was the wind an issue? Yes

Did we closely consider which direction to run the event? Yes.

Does it take 5 minutes from the time you decide to turn the pit around to the time you have athletes jumping in the new direction? No.
