Training

It seems like most people get hurt because they don't take care of their bodies. I know that thousands of vaulters aren't warm-up well enough...they don't stretch AFTERwards, and they don't take ice baths at all. An ice bath is the best thing you can do after an intense workout...and hardly anybody ...

Pole Run

Watch Brad Walker's run on You Tube (Video Title: "Walker wins on countback"). In order to be able to do what he's doing, you need to be able to drive hard out the back, which takes explosiveness and power. So do squats, power cleans, frog leaps, box jumps, stadiums...etc. You also need sp...

Long Trail Leg

Exactly...get yourself on a highbar. Also do swing-ups on the rings. Once you do it on the highbar and rings, then you know you can keep a long trail leg. So then go back to vaulting and do it there.

Not too rare

The same thing happened to me jumping at Mount SAC a few years ago. The pole broke right underneath my bottom hand, and the top of the pole sling shot into my head. Blood was pouring down my head, so I took my shirt off and and applied pressure. I went to the ER and they put 9 staples in head.

No Tap.

The tap is a crutch. Why establish a comfort zone for something you can't use when the bar goes up? If you become dependent on the tap...then you're screwed.

Counting

Counting is a good idea, and if you're a seasoned vaulter I don't think it interferes with proper technique. Pole vaulters should count so they know which phase of the run they're in (drive, drive/speed, speed), when to innitiate their pole drop (so the pole feels weightless), and when to start thei...

Remaining Calm

Remember that this is something you choose to do for fun, so relax! I assume you're eager to improve...and that you want to do it fast? You probably think about what you want to accomplish at practice. If your performance at practice doesn't match your expectations, you probably get upset, right? At...
