I know that thousands of vaulters aren't warm-up well enough...they don't stretch AFTERwards, and they don't take ice baths at all. Exactly...get yourself on a highbar. Also do swing-ups on the rings. Once you do it on the highbar and rings, then you know you can keep a long trail leg. So then go back to vaulting and do it there.

The same thing happened to me jumping at Mount SAC a few years ago. The pole broke right underneath my bottom hand, and the top of the pole sling shot into my head. Blood was pouring down my head, so I took my shirt off and and applied pressure. I went to the ER and they put 9 staples in head.

The tap is a crutch. Why establish a comfort zone for something you can't use when the bar goes up? If you become dependent on the tap...then you're screwed.

Counting is a good idea, and if you're a seasoned vaulter I don't think it interferes with proper technique.
