Re: Rule Question
As I understand the rule no person means no person. When I have my meeting with the athletes and coaches I try to remember to go over this rule and remind the athlete not to catch their own pole. I also try to cover the pole coming to rest against the crossbar without knocking the bar off. I tell th...

Re: Building your own vaulters in college.
I heard about one college coach (shall remain nameless - but an outstanding coach) who recruited something like 4 or 5 HS girls who had never vaulted, but they are all gymnasts. Sounds good!

Re: Volunteer coaches turned away
Sound very "odd" to me. Could there have been other "issues" with this volunteer. Did he have his "clearances" or was he willing to get them? I might double check that story with the AD at the school. Just my .02

Mice!
Any suggestions for how to keep mice from making a nest in pits over the "off season" when they are stored? Cost our school a new top pad! Thanks!

Re: A strange way to run a HS pole vault event
vcpvcoach has it right! The pit crew is KEY! Worked a meet on Saturday at Widener University (Chester, PA). We had 15 women, and we were done in about 70 min. At one point we had completed 45 vaults in 37 min. None of the women felt rushed. The 5 young men (work study program) had the standards move...

Arm Protectors
Questions came up in PA about arm protectors - this was sent out from the "higher ups" in the PIAA. Dan Several officials have seen or run into pole vaulters wearing protective forearm padding of one sort or another. Although the Rule Book does not address such a device specifically, the P...

Re: HS Rule Change for 2011 - 2 Min Warmup instead of 1 Run Thru
I have generally erred on the side of safety since I started officiating the Vault at the same time as the Big Ten Men's meet in Minneapolis (2002?) where the guy died.
The "guy" who died had a name - he was Kevin Dare!

Re: HS Rule Change for 2011 - 2 Min Warmup instead of 1 Run Thru
I think the HS method here is much better than the NCAA. And as I understand the rules, and have been told, HS rule will use a block of time (ie - 3 vaulters get 6 min.) and NCAA vaulters will get 2 min. for each vaulter as an individual. And the NCAA vaulters warm up in the order they will appear i...

NCAA question
Seems we get this question in the NorthEast area every year at the beginning of outdoor season, and I can't remember the answer. In outdoor season, if the PV is held indoors (for safety reasons) can results be used to qualify for other meets? And is the ruling different for DI, DII, or DIII? If you ...

Re: Gill Skydex Soft Plant Box Issue
Have had this situation at Penn State where they have a soft box on both indoor runways. I always measure from the surface just behind the top back of the box, which is the same level as the runway. And of course the standards are not rolled to zero, but rather 1" back. Dan PS - Might be a diff...

Re: So there is a shed near our pole vault pit. Legal?
Becca has the right call. It might be legal, but when in doubt wrap an old mat around the part nearest the pit. Might look a little "trailer parkish", but better safe than sorry.
