Re: Interesting new rule in New Jersey
This is sad; the rule was made to keep people from really altering poles and cutting them down. If the state I coach in had this, I wouldn't be able to coach! The coach we rented poles from uses a sharpie to write his initials to keep people from losing his poles. As a high school student, I marked ...

Re: Weighing vaulters....
4) This so-called 10' 125 was manufactured around 2000... since then the flex charts and subsequent weight-rating systems have been "adjusted" by most if not all manufacturers. The current weight rating on this pole by the same manufacturer would be 160lbs. Holding a foot down makes it th...

Re: Weighing vaulters....
That would actually make sense. I've seen numerous people here holding too high on poles too long. I know I'm only a newbie coach and I'm not usually the athlete's coach but if it's a major safety concern and it happens numerous times, I try to politely mention it. I know it can be rude but I'd rath...

Which states have middle school vault?
I was just wondering what states had middle school vault as a sport. I mean, one upside to working with a homeschool USATF team instead of a high school is I'm able to work with even the middle schoolers. (Shoot, I think one of the elementary school girls wants to try it sometime.) So, in a state wi...

Re: Poles for beginners
All right, poles are coming in soon. Coach couldn't drive to get them but the mats were finally out and we had access to the practice school's poles. They didn't have anything bigger than a 145 (well, there was a 15 ft 175 catapole) but we just used them for how-to-hold-the-pole drills and such. We ...

Re: You Might be a Redneck Pole Vaulter
If you can't get poles for a few days so you ask the athletes to bring brooms since all you're working on is walking and holding a pole correctly.

Re: Poles for beginners
Girl 5 is 5'5" and 115lb. She's a competitive swimmer, fairly fast, and is also fairly muscular.
My guess: 11'6" 120?
List of poles:
Girls 1&3:11’ 110 (probably only 1)
Girl 2:11’ 120
Girl 4:11’ 140
Girl 5: 11’6” 120
Guy 1: 13’ 160
Guys 3: 13’ 155
Guy 4: 13’ 130

Okay, Guy 4 has done some basketball and soccer.
We have a new girl. She's an athletic swimmer. I'm getting her height and weight tonight.

I don't know. I think he has a random variety of brands, though I know he has some by Gill.
Guy 4 seems athletic. He's skinny but he's a bit wiry. Not built like a sprinter but not quite built like a cross country runner either.

Re: Poles for beginners
Okay, I asked Altius and he said 11'6 or 12' x 110 and a 12/140 for the heavier girl and for the boys 13' x 160 and 12 or 13 x 120/130. How does this sound: Girls 1&3:11’ 110 Girl 2:11’ 120 Girl 4:11’6” 145 or 11’ 145 I don’t want to get too close to 4’s weight or under 2’s weight because I don’...

Re: New IAAF rule
That's not cheating; it's called warming up and staying warmed up. It's also called knowing yourself. I know some vaulters who can't touch a pole between vaults. I however was the other way; if I wasn't vaulting, I was doing a practice and warm up stuff. This included 6 step/3 left practice pole dro...
