Re: Oregon High School Top 20
I know the year is not over as yet, but I have just posted the only revision of "2012". Olivia Capbell vaulted 12'-1" at the State Meet. And she did it from 5 lefts...pretty impressive. Not sure why she was jumping from 5, but if it works, it works. She is a beast and I hope that she...

Oregon 5A Special Dist. 1, 6 girls over 10'
Great competition at Bend High yesterday. Six girls, none of whom are seniors, cleared 10' or higher, and all but one met or equaled their PR. It's a shame that 4 of the six didn't qualify for state...since they would probably all place in the top 8 in 5A. Next year everyone is going to hit auto! Te...

Re: Some practice vaults
The comments I gave you in your other thread about piking at the top still hold true. The first few jumps on this clip, you are on a pole that is too small. It makes it hard to finish strong when you are rolling the pole WAY past vertical. It seems that you move up a pole on the last few jumps...tha...

Re: Irwin 5.72m (18'09.25") at SEC's!!!!!!!
I am not surprised that Andrew has jumped this high...he is nailing a 14' takeoff at age 19! Great job by Andrew, Morry Sanders, (and Andrew's dad...also his coach, right?) , and Bryan Compton at Arkansas. You guys are doing it right! Maybe the US can score more than one medal in London! Tom

Re: Piking at the top of the vault
You look great, right up until you start to push on the pole at the end of your turn. It looks like you are pushing the pole away from your body with your hands, which prevents you from pushing down the pole, and takes away the leverage you need for a strong push and pike. The beauty of a good pike ...

Re: Relative stiffness of smaller Altius poles
Thanks for the input. We ordered her both the 12'4 135 and the 12'9 135. It was a tough call between Altius and Gill poles; they are both great poles and allow the athlete to grip near the top of the pole, which I really prefer when buying poles for HS kids. I'll let everyone know how the relative s...

Relative stiffness of smaller Altius poles
In my experience with standard fiberglass Altius poles in the 180-190 range, they are about 5-10 lbs softer than Spirit or Pacer of comparable ratings. Does this hold true for the smaller weights as well? I am specifically interested in getting a pole that falls between a Spirit 12' 130 and a Spirit...

High Desert Classic Bend, OR 8/11/12
We will be having an end-of-the-season open/masters meet again this summer at Summit HS in Bend, OR. Last year John Altendorf broke his own WR on the super-fast Mondo runway!

Re: PLANT: top hand or bottom - which holds tight, which rotates
Reggiepv, Sorry if my comments gave the wrong impression. Neither hand is allowing rotation during the approach, but neither is closed fully on the pole. An "open" hand can still squeeze the pole between the thumb and forefinger and keep it from spinning. The pole does rotate at the plant,...

Re: PLANT: top hand or bottom - which holds tight, which rotates
I agree that both ways can work. However, there is an advantage to keeping the bottom hand open. When you grip the pole tightly with the bottom hand during the approach, it automatically causes your left elbow to rise in relation to the wrist. This makes for a generally slower plant that is more lik...
