Re: Should you pull at take off?
Honestly Wally (I hope you don't mind the nickname that I use for you, Nick), I don't think "trolling" is the right word, but I do question why you're so critical of others on this thread, when you drop bombs like 'claim that he was "jumping like Bubka before Bubka"'. I take tha...

Re: Should you pull at take off?
How am I trolling? This isn't my thread and I don't want it to be. I was responding to Kirk and why I originally took offense to your comments about Branko. You responded that you meant know offense. As far as I'm concerned we're cool. If you're looking for me to expound on why I pull and advocate i...

Re: Should you pull at take off?
I don't see why you're so defensive of Branko's intent behind this thread I'm defensive of Branko because he is a friend, I respect him, and I think he deserves respect from others as well. He has no "agenda," and is not trying to invent his own technical model, provide bogus science to a...

Re: Should you pull at take off?
This thread belongs in the "Beginner column". That seems monumentally insulting to a an excellent coach who has coached multiple national champions. In case anyone is confused by the topic title, this isn't a solicitation for advice, but rather a discussion about the merits of pulling dur...

Re: Should you pull at take off?
Man I keep getting sucked back into these conversations. I have a problem... Anyways, I would like to make a few points if possible 1) There are zero elite athletes that you can even remotely find a pulling motion until they are well into the jump I think this is misleading, because unless you can m...

Re: Please Critique - Swing Hips up and Drop Shoulders
I actually would have provided almost the opposite recommendation, that being that she should initiate her swing via a forceful left arm pull, sooner in the vault. It seems that she delays the swing too long and sacrifices valuable time. I am very aware that left arm action is highly contested on th...

Re: Jersey Jumps Beach Vault 2014-Seaside Heights, NJ
Two Questions:
1) Why are the open athletes competing on Sunday? People gotta work on Monday!!
2) Are you considering bringing the Elite Men's competition back? There are some quality vaulters in the Northeast/Mid-Atlantic region. It would be a good show.

Re: Swing Efficiency Comparison: Bubka, Tradenkov, Lavillenie
I quick aside: DJ has posted (numerous times I believe) that many vaulters (Bubka included) were on poles whose extreme stiffness did not allow for adequate deflection and subsequent chord shortening: i.e. they could stand to use a softer pole. Is it possible, that a contributor to Lavillenie's succ...

Re: one in a million?
I don't think you're comment is entirely true, none the less, he would hit the takeoff, (i.e. his takeoff foot would hit the ground) with the foot well in front of the body, and the hips in front of the shoulders. He was a good high jumper (consistently over 2m), and his body position at foot-strike...

Re: one in a million?
Taking a step away from the pre-jump or not to pre-jump discussion, it seems to me like the real problem here is the run and plant. As DJ has not yet posted here, I'll be the one to say that an effective approach run, with no over-striding, leads to a good takeoff. While I do prefer free takeoffs, o...

Re: Timing of the PULL
In an ideal vault, the pull should begin as soon as the takeoff toe leaves the ground, meaning "conscious effort" should begin slightly before that.

Re: Physics Based Critique of the Petrov Method
Yay physics!! I think what willrieffer is talking about is the additional mechanical work (which is equivalent to the change in mechanical energy) which results from the vaulter compressing the pole during an inside takeoff. I would surmise (granted I was recently told that I don't stand a chance of...
