Is 20in. too close for standards?

I know you should be clearing heights with standards farther than 20. Mine are usually between 20-26 depending on how i am jumping. Is this too close? I mean my grip feels fine, and i jump up at takeoff. I use an 11'6 130 at meets and when i use the 11'6 120 at practice, i blow through it ( i land v...

Re: Overweight vaulters and colleges?

I want to try other events, but my team is so big, the field event people usually can only do one event. However, my relay partner and i are trying to convince our coach to let us try long jump, and high jump.

Re: Overweight vaulters and colleges?

Thanks, trust me starving myself never ever crossed my mind! I do have a healthy lifestyle though, but i still have a year to work on it all, and reach my goals before i am legally allowed to talk to coaches anyway.

Re: higher opening heights?

Do they allow you to have warm up jumps after passing a certain number of heights. I know in New Jersey if you pass 3 heights you get a few warm up jumps in.

Overweight vaulters and colleges?

I have seen many high school vaulters, especially girls who are a little overweight. I do not mean fat, i mean strong, fast, but still chubby and could lose 15 or 20 pounds (depending on the person). Many of them can clear heights like 9 or 10 feet, which is a fairly decent height. Myself included i...

Re: How do you find the soft side of the pole?

Hey so i am akind of confused with this as well. I alway jump, and neaver pay attention to the soft side. I use a UCS Spirit, and a Skypole. If i understand correctly, the inner part of the pre bend should be facing the vaulter at the plant, but i am still confused with what a soft side is and a sti...

Re: Crossbar and meets=bad jumps

Well the runners on my team are amazing so they really don't need me, and i wanted to try other jumps but i wouldn't be able to practice them enough and pole vault, so no, not at the moment but i have a feeling my coach is going to be putting me in the 100m

Re: Crossbar and meets=bad jumps

I also think that part of it is the atmosphere of the meet. Surprisingly, my coach can see right through me and see my anxiety during a meet, even though i thought i tcould hide it. He told me i am in my head too much, and that i need to relax and just jump. Others have told me i put too much pressu...

Re: Crossbar=bad jumps

I usually come in at 7, which i am always way over. My warm ups i usually do them until they feel good and i can grip what i am going to grip in the competition. I practice indoors, and i will try to convince my coach to put the crossbar up at practice. Are there any mental tips though?

Re: How to grip up, and get on bigger poles?

I actually need help with this too, i try to jump up but it never seems high enough. What are ways i can increase my jump. my coach won't let me do long jump. I heard squats help, but what are better, normal squats or single leg squats? My coach said if i jump up more, i will be able to grip up more.

Re: Crossbar=bad jumps

also, i think at practice having a bungee above what i can wrap, like a 12 ft bungee, helps me go higher, because i try to get it. At a meet, there is nothing else above the bar i can reach for.
