Eyes at takeoff

I have a vaulter that constantly has his eyes to the box during plant and takeoff causing his hips to stay low during takeoff. I believe that getting his eyes/head up more at plant and takeoff would create a better takeoff and the ability to raise his grip and jump on bigger poles. I have tried seve...

Re: What are coaches looking for from PVP?

I know I personally joined to few videos and analysis of vaults. I learn best from watching and reading what others have to say. I like to see videos of the drills people are doing that I could possibly include in my program. Being a high school coach in Ohio, track season is short due to weather. T...

Re: General Competition to Peaking

As a coach, I lay the run out on the track and have a towel for the box. We work on hitting are mid marks and take off marks with proper technique. I am looking for the athlete to accelerate through the plant and takeoff.

Re: General Competition to Peaking

After reading your thoughts about your 4L and 6L run, I would like to suggest maybe a 5L run. My female vaulters do a lot of short runs for 3L, but early in the season we compete from a 5L run. For some reason, the girls really like to 5L run. Possibly due to the fact that they can get up to speed a...

Re: advice on a pole, please

My personal opinion is to maybe try a 13' 160 and a 13' 165. Strive to get the vaulter jumping over their hand grip especially since he is a freshman. You have three years to get to a 14' and longer pole. Focus on technique and jumping 13'+ on 13' poles. You didn't mention how high he is jumping now...

Re: freshman boy 13'

Focus on the athletes right arm. The arm is bent during the plant and takeoff. Lots of takeoff drills can really help this athlete.

Re: freshman girl

The two things I notice right off the bat deals with her takeoff. She is way under and her right drive knee is pretty weak. Cue her to drive the right thigh and get her right heel to her butt. As for her step, pole runs and lots of them to get the takeoff point out more to an an ideal takeoff. In my...

Re: How long did it take you to get your form?

I am going to go out on a limb and say your pole is moving way to fast. You should not be jumping on a 130 lb. pole if you weigh 150 lb.

Re: Trouble bending

I would suggest reading through some of the discussions on the beginner forum. During the vault, you should not be trying to bend the pole. The focus should be placed more one a proper run, plant motion, and takeoff.

Re: NFHS Standards Minimum Setting Changed for 2013 to 18"

In my area, 15.5" was a pretty common standard setting and kids would squeak over every now and then. I would get weird looks from other coaches and vaulters when my vaulters would say standards at 24" or 30". In my opinion, the rule will not affect those that teach proper techniques ...
