Re: The need for a cardiovascular base
I have got to this great post too late too truly catch up but... A certain amount of work capacity is needed for a vaulter to be able to get through enough training to make technical and physical improvements. Cardiovascular fitness plays a role in this, but not a big one. Also the manner in which w...

Re: Weight
The gain in weight may not be a bad thing. Firstly don't do anything drastic. Certainly don't go to a high protein - low carb diet like may be suggested. This is a horrible tactic for athletes. Also avoid doing extra "cardio" or long distance training as this will certainly hurt your perfo...

Re: 10 things everyone should consider while lifting
Thanks! Do it mate! Doc loves to have students around who are/have been athletes. Acceptance shouldn't be too hard at present, but will be getting more and more competitive in the near future! Let me know if you ever have any questions. hg15_83@yahoo.co.uk

Re: Spring pre-season weight room routine
EIUvltr's "abridged version" is good advice for you. The basic principles that he illustrates are very important for you to understand if you are going to design a successful program (and thus improve your performance as a vaulter). I am sure you are getting different advice from all direc...

Re: Spring pre-season weight room routine
Jules As you are looking to address a strength issue, I feel a more intense rep scheme than you have presented would be more beneficial. What you have presented is a strength endurance microcycle - which can be part of "the big picture" to get stronger, but in the short term (the 6 weeks y...

Re: How much protein?
This is not rocket science, but it will take some time and effort. Aim to get at least 1g per lb, and you should also increase your carbohydrate intake - maybe eat one portion extra at each meal (piece of fruit, slice of bread, etc.) and snack. The nuts suggestion is a good one - great for snacks. L...

An intro
Just a brief intro here as I am new to PVP. I was introduced to this community by one of my athletes. Before working with her, I had no experience with pole vaulters but have come to appreciate and like the sport very much. I work as a sport science consultant to mostly soccer teams ranging from you...

Re: 10 things everyone should consider while lifting
This post (and the subsequent comments/discussions) are a big reason why I like to work with T&F athletes so much, especially Vaulters. Although there are some disagreements with some of the points of view posted, the very fact that this is being discussed is positive. I look forward to getting ...
