Have you thought about asking your MD to send you to a physical therapist that is familiar with sports medicine for some treatment. The therapist should be able to give you guidance in getting the elasticity back.

could do them one handed when I was 18, not now. Grip bar with right hand, grip just below right wrist with left hand for balance and go for it.

being an oldguy, my kids are now young adults. During the time when they first entered high school and started riding in cars with other kids my wife and I told them to never get in a car with an impaired driver.
