Re: Throwing the head back

I have to disagree with Kirk regarding a visual cue; although I rarely disagree with him. Having taught gymnastics, one of the visual cues for initially teaching a back flip is to tell the individual to look to the ground behind him or her. Of course after many reps of doing this it becomes second n...

Re: New pole

Another approach might be get back on the previous poles which you indicated there was no trouble bending or getting into the pit. As GasPasser indicated, holding down on a pole has a stiffing effect on it. So, if you are getting deep into the pit perhaps the poles are too soft and not getting you u...

Re: Throwing the head back

Kirk's response is clear and to the point. If you had a skip step on your third approach step wouldn't you just work to eliminate that? The fact that you already know that throwing your head back is a problem suggests you shouldn't. The only suggestion I could really offer is remember that inverting...

Re: Any critiques would be great

There is certainly not much anyone could add to what Kirk observed only to confirm and add a couple of small things. I certainly see the same thing at take off as Kirk did: the pole has started to bend, however, your plant foot is still on the ground causing you to lose a tremendous amount of vertic...

Re: Skinny vaulter pros & cons

Can't resist Joe. Have you ever heard of Jenn Suhr. Well of course you have. She is about 6' tall and probably 150-55lbs. She currently holds the women's world record at 16'6". So, you tell me, is she skinny and lanky according to your description? Best thing I think ever happened to pole vault...

Re: I keep getting rejected when I vault?

Not exactly sure what you mean by "pulling" plant. Pulling the pole toward one is a common error due primarily to a lack of confidence at take off; there seems to be a sense of security by the person to keep the pole close to the body. The high hands at take off (and actually it is more th...

Re: I keep getting rejected when I vault?

My first 2 thoughts regarding your problem are: you're not jumping at take off and, your pushing out the bottom arm at take off. The vault, like the long jump and high jump is also a jumping event with similar components and techniques. A similar jumping component is lowering the center of gravity w...

Re: loss of penitration with swing

Won't try to labor this too much more as a lot has already been written. What I will simply note is from what I've read is Enloe is so fixated on the position at take off. Which is so important and essential, but it can't be treated as a "phase". There are no phases in vaulting only contin...

Re: Can't get my steps down

If I had to guess, I would guess that you might spend too much time running full approach vaults at the pit? I suggest that you get away from the pit on the track and work on you approach; over and over again. Run your full approach on the track marking your starting point and pole tip drop point. F...

Re: loss of penitration with swing

After looking at the last two videos you posted, one thing I noticed is that you didn't appear to be jumping at take off. Remember, vaulting is a jumping event. You appear to be flat as you leave the ground. Evidence of this to me is the fact that the pole is bent even before your take off foot is o...

Re: loss of penitration with swing

Couldn't agree more with Charlie. The swing should come through the top hand. Whenever the bottom hand comes into play it will block you from swinging over the pole.
