Re: National PV Club?

No worries Bubba. Just returning the favor after you got me going when I started back coaching. Without guys like you willing to lend an ear and some solid advice, this pole vault thing would be lot harder and a lot less fun. San Onofre, Old Man's, is reporting waist to shoulder surf, glassy with bi...

Re: CA State, Rock 16-2, Barr DQ'd for swearing

At the school I coach at, we have a standing rule that any swearing in practice gets you a bunch of 400's and no more vaulting that day. So, our vaulters don't swear, in practice or in meets. The same rule applies to all the kids on the team. I credit our head coach for enforcing this rule and buil...

Re: CA State, Rock 16-2, Barr DQ'd for swearing

Those who know me know that I am not a Hard A_ _ official and I hate DQing any athlete. But officials are not in a position to pick and choose which rules we enforce. The rule does not give us the option of a warning anymore than the starter having the option to give a warning on a false start. I'm...

Re: California State, Ian Rock wins with 16-2

Okay... I get the point about wanting officials to enforce rules... but this is a rule I have seen ignored in multiple instances at many meets. Go to a high school football game and listen to the language coming from the field. Listen to the f-bombs launched many many high school coaches! Imagine th...

Re: California State, Ian Rock wins with 16-2

Evan was DQ'd for uttering a profanity after his third and final miss in the meet. Here's the kicker... he would have finished tied for third giving his team Loyola enough points to WIN the California state meet. http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/varsitytimesinsider/2011/06/track-disqualification-cost...

Re: Pole Progressions

So the pole selection would start at the best estimate on any particular day. As you use that pole and loosen up more and more you may find you are blowing through it and then move up to compensate. Also, do you see problems with planting under if when moving up you move up in pole length and grip ...

Re: Pole Progressions

So what you are saying is that vaulting is dynamic in that from day to day you will vault differently in some aspects. On a colder day you may not be able to get into a longer or weightyer(sp) pole. While on a hot day you may be blowing right through that same pole. In the first instance you would ...

Re: Pole Progressions

I've seen high school kids go through half a dozen poles in a single meet. The norm for many is to use at least a few poles per meet or practice. When these poles are in five pound increments, that's not such a big deal and more like fine tuning. This is all very different from the olden days when y...

Re: Pole Progressions

ahhhh... why use different poles... We use the pole we need, not the pole we think we need. Here's the simple version... Say you start on a 13 foot 150 gripping the top... and you start blowing through the pole. Your options are to go to a stiffer 13 foot pole or go to a similarly rated 14 pole (130...
