Re: Catapole

The up side would be toward the pit (away from the vaulter) on take-off. Verify by flexing it.

Re: Hugging the pole.....

I'm not sure maintaining space with the lower arm should be the goal here. You see pictures of Bubka with a straight bottom arm, but he has 5 meters of pole in front of him and a lower angle between the pole and the ground. Hold lower and have a higher angle, and your lower arm will necessarily be b...

Re: Help getting to the push off.

You are doing great, and you asked the right man for advice in Kirk B. One thing that I would add concerning why you can't keep from planting under: if you feel out, you are out (overstriding). I didn't learn until just before I got too old to vault that often I felt out, but my takeoff was too clos...

Re: Difference with UCS poles

No, high school rules do NOT require you to hold six inches from the end of the pole. They require you to not hold ABOVE the weight limit band. UCS ensures that six inches of pole are wasted for US high school use.

Re: Can't get my steps down

You need to move in, even though you are under on takeoff. Make sure you do not overstride. It seems to me that a perfect stride on the track is a little bit longer than a when you are coming in for takeoff on the runway. Stretching at takeoff kills your vault.

Re: Advice on rockback and moving up a pole.

If you are overstriding, it is because you feel like you are out. If you feel like you are out, you likely are out. So you end up being under. Having someone catch your takeoff point will cause you to start farther back and then overstride and be still farther under. Use a midmark instead.
