Re: Dynamic box collars

Great testing this weekend at Fitzgerald GA club meet. Several vaults using the Angel Wing supplemental dynamic plant box collar. I used the manual trigger all day because I felt the vaulters and parents would be more comfortable with me operating. It went really well. Very easy to release and retra...

Re: Dynamic box collars

1. Who's liable if the collar is deployed too early? 2. Who's liable if the collar is not deployed at all and the athlete gets seriously injured in the box? 3. Who's liable if the collar operator pulls the string and the collar fails, resulting in injury? 4. Who's liable if the collar is working pro...

Re: Dynamic box collars

Great question AVC, Just as Kirk explained, with the mechanized trigger the pole must be planted and push the activator up before the pad will be pulled on and fall. This is the most fail safe way to deploy the pad. The reason I will offer the pad with a manual release is that I want to give the coa...

Re: Dynamic box collars

Kirk, Just a quick note about the activation of my pad. I have developed a plastic flap that inserts between the box collar and the pit. It requires minimal pressure to pull on the pad This pull is about 10 degrees. Once the initial pull begins, the pad falls with gravity the final 80 . Knowing that...

Re: Dynamic box collars

Kirk, When I speak of all those who have helped me during the last few years, your name would be at the top. It was your idea for the cantilever collar that got me rejuvenated and helped me visualize some of the designs that I worked on. The pics you show are of Bruce's 'Bodyguard' two sided dynamic...

Dynamic box collars

I recently wrote a reply on the "Let's talk box collars" subject thread and then realized that with it being on page 4, it might not get any readers. My intention was to start a discussion relating to dynamic box collars. In particular to describe my invention, and hopefully convince many ...

Re: Let's talk about box collars!

Just wanted to take a minute to thank all the coaches and individuals who have supported my efforts during the past year to draft a revision to the current ASTM Standard for box collars. We nearly had the present standard withdrawn but came up one vote short on the full committee ballot. After 20 pl...

Re: Jan Wins Bronze in 1972 Olympics on Kirk's Catapole 550+

In the Authur Penn film made as part of the 'Visions of Eight' documentary of the 72 games, you can see a couple of Jan's vaults in the finals. He is wearing a t-shirt in the film of the finals, but who knows if he started the finals with it on. I think it is cool that all you guys about my age have...

Re: We need more pit spotters in meets!

Every year since I began vaulting in 1969, I have seen vaulters have near misses landing in the box area. I have witnessed vaulters falling into the box which resulted in broken bones. I have heard of other catastrophic injuries all over the country where vaulters falling into the plant box have suf...

Re: Gary Hunter WR Photo Sequence

I have had the opportunity to vault with and against Gary on three occasions. Each time he smokes me by at least 3 feet. Once indoors in Ohio I vaulted 13'6" and he had an off day and only cleared 15. It is difficult to imagine how he can continue at such a premium level year after year but he ...

Box protector plans available

Safety is number one! I have been working hard to design and improve my original ideas on ways to protect vaulters from catastrophic injuries from falls into the plant box. I have developed several improvements to my design that make my pads more 'user friendly'. After posting my first thread in whi...
