Re: How does your state do it????

In Ohio we have 3 divisions I,II,III all having 16 Districts (48 total). Top 4 in each district (per division) go to one of 4 Regions. Top 4 in each region (per division) go to the state finals. So 48 kids make it in the vault each year in Ohio. Just in one single district in Columbus, Ohio has 7 gu...

Breaking Poles

Is it worth sending broken poles back to the manufacturer, or is it a losing battle? Scenario - MS 8th grade boy, 2nd year vaulter,112 lbs, around 5'6", and 13 second 100m runner Just got to a high enough grip to where his pole started to bend on an 11'6 120, Pacer MyStic. After a day off he wa...

I just saw a 15'0 from a Columbus kid at the Teays Valley meet today. He attempted 15'3 and made great efforts.

Good point. I was assuming that the pole weight ratings were the same.

Most likely because the most common fault, is focusing on getting to the pad rather than jump vertically. They lean into the bar. It's a hard habit to break. Could also be caused by the penultimate step being outside the curve.[/quote] I had him stand on a box and do a backwards jump over the bar to...

Use the 13'6 until you can penetrate well and feel like you own it, then go to the next pole.

I put one of my vaulters in the HJ and he cleared 5'8 using the same technique. When I tried to teach him how to flop he could not get over 5'6. He just jumped into the bar. That technique does show potential, but if you want to be competitive you need to learn how to flop. If you can scissor 6' you...

The highest vault in the Columbus area this year is 14'4". I do not know much about the rest of the state other than 15'0 won the indoor championships. I would assume the indoor champion would improve on his mark after some training. With weather in Ohio you never know what the conditions will ...

I have my team warm up with a short set of dynamic stretches, go through a quick hamstring and quad static stretch, and then go through a full set of dynamic stretches. The whole routine takes about 25 minutes. The vaulters then break off and measure their runway, take a few pop ups, take a full run...

Taking a break helps too, like a week of no vaulting, maybe some light training, but that's it. Maybe this won't work right now since you have a competition coming up, but for future slumps... Taking a break really helps. All of my vaulters took a week long break and worked on another event. When t...
