Re: USA vaulters grips?

Just Remember......The highest gripper and biggest pole user was Bubka....check out his grip width. Remember this as well... PV is gymnastics on a stick. Look at the Olympic gymnasts doing giants (regular, not inverted German giants).....Their grip is perfect for the giant. Usually shoulder width an...

Re: Tips on keeping the left leg straight?

Leap (jump)forward and upward at takeoff. Keep your takeoff foot toes pointed at your take off spot as long as possible, then sweep the takeoff shin/foot long until you pass the chord (straight line) of the pole. Try to bring your knees to the top had or top of the pole, NOT the chest. If you hang f...

Re: Isinbayeva not what she used to be

AGREE..........the difference of where she was to where she was supposed to be.....for a vaulter.....is like the difference from the south rim of the grand canyon to the north rim of the grand canyon.......it just ain't gonna work. If "under" is "bad"...."out" is fatal!...

Re: WC Men Finals - What a competition!

Borges has the best TRAIL LEG ACTION AND INVERSION I have seen in a long, long, long time. The force he generates is great. He will jump much higher. All the others are tucking and that inhibits the hips from rising (ala Bubka, Isi) Borges taps the bottom like he is on a highbar doing Giants!!! Wond...

Re: Worst indoor season ever ?

There have been many great, big, fast vaulters......There have been many great, fast small vaulters....There has NEVER been a GREAT slow vaulter. Speed (sprinting) is a strength event (ever see any weak sprinters?) And pole vaulting is a SPEED event. Yes, length of run is very important but I believ...

Re: John Pennel

John Pennel I considered John a very good friend and competitor. The following pretty much sums up his career. What a great athlete. Not mentioned below though, I do believe that when in high school, John tied the world record for the 20' rope climb. He showed up at UCLA in 1968 having not trained a...

Fred Arnold has passed away

US Pole Vaulting lost a dear friend last week. Mr. Fred Arnold passed away. He and his wife Madeleine were great pole vault officials, having worked the Olympic Games in Los Angeles and Atlanta. The couple contributed much time and money to pole vaulting and have thousands of friends all over the wo...

Re: Looking for old footage/information on kjell isaksson(FOUND)

Kjell's jump on the film was definetly at UCLA. It was definetly a world record! I competed for UCLA and was at that meet. Kjell and Hans Lagerqvist were very good friends. Hasse (Hans) stayed with my wife and I in our appt. in Santa Monica. We trained together a lot at UCLA. The rule re: the pole u...
