Re: RIP Alan Launder (altius)

The world of pole vault is markedly better off for having had Alan Launder as a part of it. I can't think of anyone who has made as wide an impact on vault coaching. The quality and depth of BTB and, later, BTB2 is what really got me hooked on pole vault 9-ish years ago. I loved vault, but those boo...

Re: Bubka says current pole vaulters lack technique

I am sure that it hurts Canadian athletes quite a bit that they get so little international experience. Athletics Canada only sends them to big meets if they think they are a good medal threat. The young guys don't get the experience they need to actually medal when they get better, and it seems to...

Re: Vancouver 2010 Canadian Athletics Torch Bearers

Maybe their absence doesn't mean they weren't asked--perhaps they were just busy at the time and/or nowhere near the torch relay route? I can't imagine Athletics Canada would deliberately omit gold medalists like Mark McCoy and half of the '96 mens relay including (and especially) Donovan Bailey...

Re: Mom and son are pole-vaulting teammates at Manitoba

BAHAHA!!! I love that this ended up in the local paper and on the internet. As if poor Josh didn't get enough crap for this already... Teresa is not only a talented and fearless competitor, but a super fun gal. And her 3.70 is well over the auto-qualifier for the national championships, something th...

Re: Caffeine

With one possible exception it should be avoided. As both a diuretic and a laxative, caffeine has the dual effects of making your body less effective at using the water you drink along with peeing out the water faster. Increasing amounts of caffeine are associated with increased difficulty staying h...

Re: A New Model and Approach to Viewing Pole Vault Technique

If I'm understanding him right, the author seems to place undue importance on the fact that, in the pole bounce drill, a carefully timed plant can take a pole to vertical and beyond. I don't want to give the impression I think the prescribed planting action is unimportant (because it is spot on and ...

Re: Jared Lutz ( PV accident that happened 2008)

It's because of things like this that I forbid my vaulters to use 'christmas tree' style spikes in their shoes, as such a design is more likely to snag on the cover pad. Pyramids or pins--thats it (and if they are pins, they have to be thick enough that the ends wont bend and form hooks).

Re: take-off dutch athletes

Wonderful video Niels--great shooting and editing. Thanks for sharing. Did anyone else think about FedEx when the second song came on? Haha I agree that the take-off of Jason Wurster and Christian Tamminga are the best. Not entirely free, but close to free. Both have a vertical impulse without losin...

It's Isinbayeva. I'd recognize that bar clearance anywhere.
