when you're just beginning, the major points are run as fast as you can under control, plant early and high, and jump up as hard as you can. Once you can get that down, then you have to move to stuff like working on your drive knee and your trail leg

speed work is always good for beginners, so anything in that area will help. If you have access to a high bar there are several good drills that you can do there as well, otherwise, core strength is also key

Like Rhino said, stick with the smaller pole for a little while, on shorter runs. Then, when you are blowing through it on your short runs, move up to the bigger pole, but start at the same grip, if not a little lower, that you were holding on the small pole.
